You may not think that you do, but I’ll bet that you have them. You are probably so used to them being there that you think they’re you, part of who you are, an aspect of being you.
When people hear voices that they really think are separate from them it is liable to result in attention from others who are concerned for their welfare. Of course, time was when it would have got you burned as a witch. Now there would be a drug to shut it down. But all that is only for those whose voices are not under control like yours and mine are. Our voices are better concealed. We pass for sane.
Perhaps I should explain what I am talking about. When you make a mistake, do you have a voice that calls you stupid? When you knock something over is there one which says “Klutz!” (or words to that effect)? And when you have the idea that there is something interesting or enterprising that you could do, is there a voice which is saying “you can’t” or “that’s too risky” or “don’t stand out from the crowd”?
I listened recently to a recording where a young woman talked of how she was avoiding her wealthy parents, and didn’t want to receive money from them, even though they wanted to give it to her and weren’t trying to control her with it. Among her reasons for this exercise in inverse prosperity were:-
“My friends won’t like it if I have it easy when it is still difficult for them and I don’t want to make them feel bad”. You might wonder at the definition of “friend” if that doesn’t include “I am really happy for you”.
“I should make money for myself.” You could think that choosing to be born to wealthy parents meant that she already had done it for herself. And you could question why simply receiving effortlessly (in whatever way) is not OK.
“Even though they aren’t trying to control me, if I accept their money I will feel like I should do what they want”. That is, she was projecting obligations into the situation, creating her own guilt and imagined requirements.
There were more, but I hope you are getting the idea that we take on beliefs and turn them into voices that sabotage the very things we desire. The irony is that the recording was of a money workshop. She had gone there because her prosperity was not what she wanted it to be!
So what voices are you hearing, and are those voices actually yours? If you are hearing “stupid” or “wrong” or “don’t get above yourself” types of voice, could they possibly have come from you? Of course they couldn’t; that would be insane. You only have to look at little children to know that they aren’t born with those voices – they think they can do anything. They buzz and bubble with aliveness and potential. The voices of judgement are gifts we are given by our loving parents and family, by our caring teachers and communities. Sometimes they are just in the cultural ether, often unspoken. We express ourselves without inhibition and the atmosphere changes – no-one even says “be quiet” but we are sensitive enough to feel that our aliveness is somehow too much and not welcomed. We feel the judgements even when they are not verbalised.
More than that, what if you are more connected, more intuitive, more sensitive than you have ever imagined yourself to be? What if we all are? What if a high proportion of the thoughts and viewpoints that you hold are ones that you have absorbed or are absorbing even now from other people, from the field of consciousness. What if some of them are even thought forms that are echoing down the centuries, whether floating in the akashic field or echoing down the family tree?
The people at Access Consciousness suggest that as many as 98% of what we believe to be our thoughts are in fact not ours at all and they have a suggestion for how we might play with that. They suggest that for three days, you adopt a practice. Every time you notice a thought or a point of view, you take a second to centre yourself, notice your energy (how your body feels) and you ask yourself “Who does this belong to?” If your body feels even just a little bit lighter, then it is not yours. In that case, what you do is make a conscious choice to “return it to sender, with consciousness attached”. You can also make an additional conscious choice to release and undo whatever in yourself allowed you to accept the judgement in the first place. If you do this consistently (and don’t worry if you forget – just be patient and persistent) you will discover after a while that there is more space in your awareness.
And even if you don’t choose to go with that practice, just be aware that if you have negative and judgemental thoughts, you weren’t born with them. So what if our tendency to judge things as right or wrong, good or bad, is a significant part of how we separate ourselves from the Divinity of creation. What if we are confusing the idea of making choices (this is what will be good for me and humanity at this moment) with rigid rules about what is possible which get us stuck in polarities and keep us from being truly present?
So maybe if you stop listening to the voices, stop believing that they are the true expression of who you are or that they represent a real knowing of what the universe has to offer in any moment, you could turn your life into a walking, living meditation.
